Derek McInnes admits Scotland job is part of his managerial masterplan

Derek McInnes admits it would be an honour to become Scotland manager but admits Aberdeen remains his sole focus.

The Dons boss is one of the bookies favourites to replace Alex McLeish as the leader of the national team

The 47-year-old has turned down Rangers and Sunderland in recent years and enjoys a level of control at Pittodrie that other bosses could only dream of.

A new training ground is on its way and a proposed new stadium at Kingsford is edging closer.

SFA chief Ian Maxwell met with his board earlier this week and McInnes is believed to be high on the list of potential candidates.

McInnes boasts an enviable CV and has guided Aberdeen to four consecutive second-placed finishes in the Premiership.

His side have also been regulars in the latter stages of Cup competitions while McInnes has dealt with some of his best players moving on.

Sven-Goran Eriksson wants Scotland job as former England boss contacts SFA

And McInnes admits the lure of taking charge of his country certainly appeals to him.

He said: “I think it would be a real privilege for any Scotsman to manage his country. It would be for me.

“That would be part of the plan for me, at some point in the future, to manage my country.

“It’s disappointing to see Alex lose his job and see the country having to look round for a manager. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of contenders for it.

“It would be something that I would be interested in at some point.

“But I’m happy here doing the job I am at Aberdeen.”

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has thrown his hat into the ring and internal candidates Scot Gemmill and Malky Mackay also have their backers within the governing body.
