Derek Hatton withdraws application to rejoin Labour Party

Derek Hatton has withdrawn his application to rejoin the Labour Party.

The controversial former deputy leader of Liverpool Council had been readmitted to the party that he was expelled from 34 years ago in February.

But the ECHO exclusively revealed that he was subsequently suspended by Labour just two days later after he was found to have posted tweets that were deemed antisemitic.

An investigation was launched by Labour's ruling National Executive Committee, but it is now being reported that Mr Hatton - who was a member of Militant in the 1980s - has withdrawn his application and is no longer a member of the Labour party.

A spokesman said “ Derek Hatton has withdrawn his membership application and is therefore not a member of the Labour Party.”

Mr HJatton will reveal his reasons for withdrawing his membership bid in his exclusive ECHO column on Thursday.
