DETROIT _ A Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputy was shot Wednesday afternoon after responding with a partner to reports of a neighbor dispute at a residence in Superior Township, northeast of Ypsilanti, a spokesman said.
The deputy, whom sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said has worked for the department "for quite some time," was stable at a local hospital. The gunman was barricaded inside the residence as of about 4 p.m. Eastern.
Residents nearby were advised to remain indoors and avoid the area entirely until further notice.
Jackson said the incident began at 2:11 p.m. when the deputies received a call about a neighbor dispute during which one person had fired a weapon at another. Upon arriving, deputies took gunfire.
No one else was believed to be injured.
Jackson said a crisis negotiator was on the scene.
The area was filled with dozens of law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies, most carrying long guns.
Thaddeus Gibson, who said he lives nearby, said he was driving home from work and his wife called and said, "Are you close? Don't try to come home. There are all sorts of police running through the neighborhood."
Gibson said when he arrived police were just starting to stop people near the entrance to the Oakbrook subdivision.
He said his wife was home alone and was pretty panicked. He told her to go to the basement.
