Depression may trigger heavy rains on Sunday in Andhra Pradesh

VISAKHAPATNAM: The low-pressure area that has formed over west-central Bay of Bengal now lies as a well-marked low-pressure area over west-central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts.

It is likely to concentrate into a depression over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast by Saturday.

The system is expected to trigger heavy rain at isolated places over all the districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, thunderstorms accompanied with lightning likely at isolated places over all the districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema region in the state on Sunday. Gusty winds of speed 30-40 km likely at times, at isolated places over all the districts of north Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Sunday.

Parts of the state received heavy rainfall on Friday night.

Bheemavaram in West Godavari district recorded rain of 13 cm, followed by 12 cm in Palakoderu, 11 cm in Velairad of West Godavari district, 11 cm in Palasa of Srikakulam district, 10 cm each in Amalapuram of East Godavari district and in Mandasa of Srikakulam district, 9 cm each in Vararamachandrapur of East Godavari and Sompeta of Srikakulam district, 8 cm each in Kukunoor of West Godavari and Kunavaram of East Godavari. Bheemili in Vizag city, Gajapathinagaram and Parvathipuram in Vizianagaram region, Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district and Tadepalligudem of West Godavari district received 7 cm each rainfall.

Director of IMD-Amaravati, Stella S, said that moderate to heavy rains lashed parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema districts from Friday to Saturday. The mercury in all parts of the state dipped considerably ( 2 to 5 degree Celsius) on Sunday. Narsapur recorded 26.4 degree Celsius and Jangamaheswarapuram recorded 34 degree Celsius on Sunday, she added.

The Weathermen said that the heavy rain may cause localized flooding and waterlogging of low-lying areas, traffic congestion, damage to paddy ripe crops and minor damage to banana plantations on Sunday.

Few tribal parts in Vizianagaram district lost connectivity with the nearby plain areas as River Champavathi was swelling due to heavy rains for the past few days. EOM
