Department of Agriculture issues orange forest fire warning with date of peak risk

The Department of Agriculture has issued an Orange Forest Fire Warning arising from weather patterns and expected level of risk, which is expected to peak on Friday.

The warning is in place until 12pm on Monday, July 5.

The authorities have said that the current dry weather patterns and high temperatures are hazardous.

In a statement, the Department said: "A high fire risk is deemed to exist in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist. This risk phase is expected to peak on Friday, July 2nd, 2021."

Unless this weekend sees significant rainfall, this Orange warning will remain in place until midday on Monday.

Members of the public that plan on visiting forests and other recreational sites over the next few days are being asked to adhere to regulations introduced to limit the spread of Covid-19.

For example, vehicles must not be parked at site entrances or impede emergency service access to forest roads. Forest visitors should not use barbeques or open fires too.

All forest owners and managers are being advised to best prepare for any likely outbreaks of fire.

Meanwhile, in the interest of safety, members of the public have been asked to follow these five rules and instructions;

1. Do not light fires in and around forests or open land.

2. Do not attempt to intervene or fight fires under any circumstances.

3. Gather all family/group members and move to a safe fuel-free location such as a car park, upwind of the fire.

4. Telephone Fire and Rescue Services via 112 and report the fire and its location.

5. Evacuate if instructed to do so, and cooperate with all Emergency Service.
