As the November 3 presidential election nears, more and more celebrities are using their platforms to encourage fans to vote. Now, Demi Lovato just took it one step further with her new song, ‘Commander In Chief.’
The protest song describes President Donald Trump’s mishandling of COVID-19 and his failure to condemn racial injustice. Upon the song's release, Lovato spoke with CNN about the power of using your voice.
“It’s very important for me that I get to use my platform for something much bigger than just singing,” the 28-year-old explained.
Lovato also spoke about the growing number of celebrities speaking out in similar ways, specifically mentioning Taylor Swift, who Lovato has criticized in the past.
“You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t. You can list Taylor Swift as a perfect example of that exact saying,” Lovato said of Swift’s recent decision to endorse Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden.
“For years she got trashed because she wasn’t taking a stance and wasn’t standing up for these rights, and she kind of took a back seat. And now, she's become very political and there are people that are unhappy with that, too,” Lovato added. “It’s just, like, you have to live what feels authentic to you. To me, that's using my platform to speak out about the things that I see that are wrong.”
Lovato has shared on social media that a video for ‘Commander In Chief’ is coming on October 14, and she’s also slated to perform the song at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards that same day.
