Delivery driver gets his friend's vehicle seized after using it with no insurance

A delivery driver had his car seized after it was found that the vehicle actually belonged to his friend and he had no insurance.

The incident happened in the late hours of Thursday evening (January 13) in Ashington after being stopped by Northumbria Police.

The driver thought that his insurance policy covered him to drive his friend's vehicle whilst delivering, however, it was cancelled and the car was seized by officers.

A statement from Northumbria Police Road Safety's Twitter account read: "Car #seized #s165 in #ashington tonight after this delivery driver thought his own (cancelled) policy covered him to drive his friends car #noinsurance #roadsafety @DriveInsured."

According to gov.uk, police can give you a fixed fine of £300 and six penalty points if you are caught driving without insurance.

If the case goes to court, this can be increased to an unlimited fine and/or be disqualified from driving.

Police also have power to seize or, in some cases, destroy the vehicle if the person is not insured.
