A delivery driver dropping off parcels in the run-up to Christmas has been left fighting for his life in hospital after being hit with his own van.

The man, 49, was struck by the vehicle in Newbiggin, Northumberland, when another man climbed into it and ran him down on Monday afternoon.

He was rushed to hospital and remained there in a critical condition on Monday night.

Police were called to reports of acrash in Derwentwater involving a blue Citroen Berlingo at around 2:45pm.

Two men, aged 18 and 27, have been arrested and were in custody, but efforts remained ongoing to trace the van.

Police believe the suspects may have been in the area before the incident, and have asked anybody with any information to come forward.
