NEW DELHI: Taking forward the Delhi government’s mission of providing skill education and training to youth of low-income communities, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia inaugurated another “Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University Lighthouse Centre” at Malkaganj in north Delhi on Wednesday. The first such centre was inaugurated in Kalkaji in March.
“This centre will offer high quality short-term vocational skilling courses as well as a plethora of employment opportunities for youth between 18 and 30 years of age. DSEU is the first university in the country, which has taken such a unique step to equip youth of underserved communities with the new-age skills. Students registered with the lighthouse will get direct admissions for graduation in DSEU. They can either get the certification course or complete their graduation degree,” said Sisodia.
The lighthouse will also help address the problems of unemployment caused due to Covid, Sisodia said.
The foundation courses for youth will be based on an art-based curriculum with creative activities to develop workplace competencies and mindfulness among students. Spoken English and digital literacy will be an important part of this foundational skilling programme.
The Malkaganj centre aims to upskill over 1,200 youths from nearby slum clusters in the next two years. It comprises a music room, eight training rooms, including two open classrooms, a retail course room, make-up skills room, counselling room, videoconferencing room, self-learning space, and a fully equipped tech hub with wi-fi connection and 20+ computers.
The centre has been set up in collaboration with Lighthouse Communities Foundation and Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Speaking at the occasion, DSEU vice-chancellor Neharika Vohra said, “This project will help us reach out to underprivileged communities by bringing the learning spaces close to their homes.”
