Delhi: Police, lab get DCW notice over data security of forensic samples

NEW DELHI: Delhi Commission for Women has issued a notice to Delhi Police and Forensic Science Laboratory, Rohini over data security of forensic samples.

DCW said it has recommended to Delhi Police and FSL several times that the samples provided by Delhi Police to FSL should not have the details of the survivor and accused as well as the content of the FIR. The commission has stated that the same can be easily achieved by creating a unique identification code for the samples.

"This will help in controlling the access of personal information of the accused and survivor to the staff of FSL, including those who examine the samples. Through this, chances of corruption and/or prejudice in FSL shall be significantly reduced," said DCW.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal has observed that till date, no action has been taken on this issue by the police and laboratory. In its notice, the women's panel has asked the police to state the purpose of sharing the names and other details of the survivor and accused with the lab. The commission has also asked FSL to provide details of steps taken to protect the details of survivors and accused from its staff.

Maliwal said, "The information of victims and accused must be strictly protected from FSL, which will then be able to operate in a more free and fair manner. The commission has recommended Delhi Police and FSL to formulate a mechanism in this regard."
