Delhi HC seeks Centre's stand on plea over protection of Waqf properties in central vista redevelopment

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has sought the Centre's stance on the potential impact of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project on Waqf properties.

Justice Prateek Jalan instructed the Centre to submit a status report, detailing whether specific properties of the Delhi Waqf Board have been or are likely to be affected by the ongoing project.

In 2021, the Waqf Board approached the high court seeking the preservation and protection of six properties in the project area. The court ordered the Centre to provide a status report on the properties' status and impact on them. The Waqf counsel mentioned the demolition of a mazar near the Sunehri Bagh mosque during the proceedings and sought interim relief.

The court, considering the pending matter for over two years, directed the Union of India to submit a status report on the properties mentioned in the petition and their status concerning the Central Vista Redevelopment. The Central government counsel clarified that no action was currently being taken with respect to the properties.

The court will hear the matter again on February 9, 2023.
