Delhi cops rescue law student trying to end life by jumping into river

NEW DELHI: Alert cops saved the life of a law student who attempted suicide by jumping into Yamuna on Saturday.

Sub-inspector Gurish from the central district received information that a man might attempt suicide. “During the inquiry, his location was traced to Signature Bridge in Timarpur,” the officer said.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said they sent a team at Signature Bridge where a youth had already jumped into the river.

“He was directed by the police staff to stay firmly at a spot against the flow of the water and was rescued with the help of divers,” the officer said. He was admitted to the Trauma centre.

During the inquiry, he was identified as a second-year law student studying in Bangalore. “He was staying at a hotel in Paharganj since February 27, without informing his friends and family. He had failed in a subject in his trimester exams and had gone into depression after the results were announced,” the DCP said.

He further told cops that he could not collect the courage to face his father and teachers. “He tweeted that he wanted to die by suicide, which was read by his family members and they made a PCR call,” the officer said.
