Delhi battles heatwave again, any relief unlikely today

NEW DELHI: After 15-days of respite, parts of the city recorded heatwaves on Saturday as the daytime temperature soared and reached over 47 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city.

According to the weather department, the heatwave is likely to continue on Sunday, as several places in Delhi had already recorded a maximum temperature above 45 degrees Celsius on Friday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at Safdarjung, the maximum temperature was recorded at 43.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the season’s average, against 42.9 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 28.7 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season’s average, against 24.9 degrees Celsius a day earlier.

The humidity at Safdarjung oscillated between 61% and 13%.

On Saturday, Mungeshpur recorded the highest maximum temperature at 47.1 degrees Celsius, while Sports Complex (Akshardham) recorded 46.9 degrees Celsius. Najafgarh saw 46.2 degrees Celsius, Jafarpur recorded 45.7 degrees Celsius, and Ridge recorded 45.5 degrees Celsius – all recording heatwaves.

“The clear sky and dry weather led to heatwaves in isolated areas of the city. The maximum temperature on Sunday is likely to hover around 43 degrees Celsius,” started a statement from IMD.

Meanwhile, the air quality of the city remained within the poor category. The air quality index (AQI) on Saturday was 227 against 240 a day earlier.

“For the next three days (June 5-7), peak wind speed is likely to be 18-30 km/h causing moderate dispersion. AQI is likely to be within ‘moderate’ or ‘lower end of poor’ range. High temperature (around 40ºC) and mixing layer height (around 3 km) maintains strong ventilation by convection, improving air quality,” said a statement from SAFAR.
