Declared ‘dead’, Andhra Pradesh woman accuses grandson of forgery

VIJAYAWADA: In yet another incident, a woman lodged a complaint with the revenue divisional officer (RDO) alleging that her grandson illegally registered land documents in his name by submitting forged documents declaring her as ‘dead’.

The incident happened at Issapalem village of Narasaraopet mandal in Guntur district on Monday.

The woman, identified as Bandlamuri Venkayamma (90), who was reported dead in land registration documents, filed a complaint at the RDO office declaring she was “alive and well”.

Venkayamma alleged that her grandson, Bandlamuri Kotaiah, forged a death certificate in her name to grab 20 crore worth of land measuring nine acres. She also alleged that Kotaiah got help in forging the documents from people working within the revenue department and sought an inquiry into the matter. Venkayamma was accompanied by her relatives and submitted ID proofs, including Aadhaar card and Voter ID, while submitting the petition.

This is the second such incident in the state after a similar instance was reported from Pegallapadu village in Nellore district about two weeks ago. On October 6, a 55-year-old farmer, Kamel Saheb, lodged a similar complaint claiming that his younger brother forged fake records to show that he was dead to ‘illegally’ snatch one acre of land for himself which was supposed to be split 50-50 as inheritance after his father, Dastagiri, passed away.

In both instances, officials are yet to act.

It might be recollected that a similar incident became sensational at Amilo village in Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh, where a farmer, Lal Bihari, fought with Indian bureaucracy in courts for 19 years to prove he was alive.

Based on the story, Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi aced the role of Lal Bihari in Kaagaz which achieved critical acclaim.
