Death of sailor at Faslane naval base 'does not appear suspicious'

The death of a young sailor at a Scots naval base does not appear to be suspicious, police have said.

The body of 25-year-old engineering technician Stephen Cashman was found at Faslane, a few miles north of Helensburgh, last Thursday.

Police are treating his death as ‘unexplained’ pending the results of a post mortem examination but on Tuesday the force added: “However, it does not appear to be suspicious.”

Mr Cashman’s devastated girlfriend, Faye Walker, led the tributes earlier this week to “her guy” and vowed to keep his memory and the dreams they had alive.

A spokesperson for the Royal Navy confirmed the tragic death on Saturday and said their thoughts were with all those who knew and loved Stephen.

On Tuesday afternoon a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.30pm on Thursday 9 December, officers were called to Faslane Naval Base following the death of a 25-year old man.

“A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death. The death is being treated as unexplained, however, it does not appear to be suspicious.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

The Clyde base is home to Britain's fleet of four Vanguard class submarines equipped with Trident nuclear missiles and five other Astute and Trafalgar class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
