DCU 0-14 IT Carlow 0-7: David Garland and Paddy Small star as hosts claim Sigerson Cup

Dublin star Paddy Small turned on the style as DCU powered to their fifth Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup title.

The All-Ireland winning attacker was on song with two second-half points as the tournament hosts cruised to another comfortable win.

Club and county colleague Evan Comerford contributed three points from frees also while Dublin senior hopefuls Shane Carthy and Sean Bugler got on the score-sheet too.

It was an impressive win for Paddy Christie’s men, who won their first title in five years with relative ease in blustery conditions.

Aside from their two-point Round 1 win over Garda College, they had routine wins over Queens, UCD and first-time finalists IT Carlow.

Monaghan’s David Garland was excellent and hit 0-4, while the DCU defence restricted IT Carlow to just a point from play over the hour or so.

IT Carlow brought a large and vocal crowd to the north-Dublin venue but trailed from the first score of the game in the second minute until full-time.

The underdogs were content to soak up whatever DCU could throw at them and attempt to hit them on the break.

It was a strategy that yielded just two points for IT Carlow in the whole of the first-half.

But chances were also at a premium for DCU who only led by 0-5 to 0-2 at the break after wasting two goal opportunities.

The hosts looked the fitter and more determined side in the second-half and stretched the gap to five with points from Comerford and Micheal Bannigan.

Small was on target again late on and another Dublin forward, Sean Bugler, rounded off the scoring with a fisted effort.

Black cards for Carlow duo Richard Hitchcock and Niall Hughes left them with depleted numbers late on under the new sin-bin rule.
