Dawn French will reprise her Vicar of Dibley role for BBC Christmas special

Dawn French is returning to The Vicar of Dibley.

The veteran actress and comedian, 63, will be reprising her role as Geraldine Granger, the often flustered titular Vicar.

The BBC confirmed that the star would be returning for the iconic show's Christmas special, titled The Vicar of Dibley In Lockdown.

An excited Dawn said: "Back in the dog collar, back in Dibley and back on your telly at Christmas. I couldn't be happier. Bless you."

And show pen, Richard Curtis, enthused: "Like every village in the country, there's been a lot happening in Dibley this year - and Dawn has got a lot to say about it."

The Vicar of Dibley originally aired in 1994, and came to an end in 2007.

And earlier this year, it was briefly brought back to fan acclaim as part of the BBC's Big Night In.

Dawn appeared on a video call into the studio in full costume to urge kindness and good will during lockdown.

The money raised on the night went toward those suffering from Covid.

It's not known which others of the original cast members will be returning.

Roger Lloyd-Pack, who played Owen Newitt, died in 2014, while Alice Horton actress Emma Chambers and Frank Pickle actor John Bluthal both died in 2018.

The show ended as Geraldine prepared to wed fiancé Harry Kennedy (Richard Armitage), with series of mishaps threatening their big day.

Two of the bridesmaids turned up dressed as Daleks from Doctor Who, with Alice wearing a face mask of Mother Theresa.

Jealous Vicar Jeremy, who had eyes for Geraldine, made snide remarks about Harry throughout.
