David Moyes explains why Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United are about more than just 'energy'

David Moyes believes that Marcelo Bielsa 'deserves a lot of credit' for Leeds United's style of play, as his West Ham United side travel to Elland Road on Saturday.

The Hammers have lost just once in seven matches so far this season, whilst Leeds are still searching for their first Premier League win of the campaign.

It has been a difficult start for Bielsa's men, who currently sit just outside the relegation zone and could have up to eight players ruled out through injury and suspension.

Leeds picked up their third point following a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United last Friday, and despite their recent run of form, Moyes praised the Argentine for how he sets his team up.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the West Ham boss said: "His teams have always had incredible energy, man-to-man marking in all areas of the pitch.

"But I think they’re more than that: they’re a really good long passing team, and for that, the manager deserves a lot of credit.

"He does great work with them and has done great work with Leeds United."

West Ham will be boosted by the fact that they won both meetings between the two sides last season, including a 2-1 win last December thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna.

That success helped them to a sixth-place finish in 2020/21, which earned them a place in this season's Europa League alongside Leicester City.

They began their adventure in that competition with a 2-0 victory at Dinamo Zagreb as Michael Antonio stole the show in Croatia.

Moyes' side will come into the game with confidence following their mid-week win at Old Trafford, but insists that it will be a 'tough' test.

He continued: "I think we’re just going to try and do what West Ham have been doing recently: be positive in our play and score goals, but also be strong defensively.

"I think if you look at Leeds’ play, you’d consider them a really positive team, so we have to think like that as well.

"We’ll try and attack them and score when we can, but we’ll have another tough job trying to defend against them."
