David Luiz and Mikel Arteta's outburst as referee checked VAR monitor in Arsenal vs Leeds

Arsenal were left furious after being denied a penalty following a VAR check against Leeds.

The Gunners raced into a 4-0 lead following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's hat-trick at the Emirates - but only after controversy when the score was 1-0.

Bukayo Saka felt he had been fouled by Liam Cooper and referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot.

Yet he was called over to the VAR monitor to check his decision and eventually overturned the call.

He deemed there was not enough in the challenge to warrant a foul, handing the visitors a lifeline.

Just before Attwell concluded his check, David Luiz was heard shouting at the referee in reference to his controversial recent red card in defeat against Wolves.

"Penalty and a red card, like at Wolverhampton!” Luiz is reported to have said, whilst Arteta appeared to make reference to the same incident, adding: "should be penalty, red card”.

Moments later, Attwell awarded neither a penalty nor a red card as he deemed an offence had not been committed.

Thankfully for Arsenal, they responded in fine fashion to storm into a big lead before being pegged back by Leeds.

Aubameyang was in electric form in attack - after Arteta hinted he had a plan involving his captain in a central role when interviewed before the game.

“It’s great, he needed a little bit of time. He’s spent a few days without any training sessions, away with the family,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“He’s back, he’s been training well and that’s why he’s in the team today.

“He’s playing through the middle as part of the game plan and something we think we can exploit against them. Let’s see if it works.”
