NEW YORK — David Byrne is headed back to Broadway.
The Talking Heads singer-songwriter’s pop musical “Here Lies Love” will open July 20 at the Broadway Theatre on 53rd Street, producers announced Thursday.
The disco-centric show — a collaboration between Byrne and fellow musician Fatboy Slim — focuses on Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, who was married to dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Originally created as a concept album, the “Here Lies Love” stage musical previously played off-Broadway, at New York’s Public Theater, for four months in 2013. It’s also played in London and Seattle.
“As a team of binational American producers — Filipinos among us — we are thrilled to bring ‘Here Lies Love’ to Broadway! We welcome everyone to experience this singularly exuberant piece of theatre,” the show’s producers said in a joint statement Thursday.
“The history of the Philippines is inseparable from the history of the United States, and as both evolve, we cannot think of a more appropriate time to stage this show. See you on the dance floor!”
The U.K.-born Byrne, 70, won a special Tony Award in 2021 and received two Grammy nominations for his previous Broadway show, “American Utopia.” He contributed the concept, music and lyrics to “Here Lies Love.”
Fatboy Slim, the performing name of Norman Cook, is also credited for the “Here Lies Love” music, while Tony winner Alex Timbers handled the show’s direction.
Preview performances begin June 17.
