David Beckham drops management hint and asked if he would take Manchester United job

David Beckham has suggested he could be open to embarking on a career in management, but has dismissed the suggestion of taking over at Manchester United.

Beckham came through the ranks at United as part of the famous Class of 92 generation, before going on to represent some of Europe's biggest clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. He is now part of a group looking to establish a new MLS franchise in Miami.

But despite his many business commitments, Beckham has revealed his approach to taking a more hands-on role in football has changed slightly, opening the door for a potential job in coaching.

Each of Beckham's Class of 92 teammates have tried their hand at coaching, with Ryan Giggs the current Wales manager and Phil Neville coaching the England Women team. Nicky Butt is Head of First Team Development at United, while Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have had short-lived tenures at Valencia and Oldham respectively.

“Management never interested me,” Beckham told GQ .

“I always enjoyed coaching kids, but I never ever had any aspirations about going into management.

“I think it’s great for other players, because they have the experience and that can be great for clubs, but for me personally I never felt that it was something I would be good at.

“I’m sure I would enjoy it and I’m sure I would grow into that role and eventually be good at it, but, to be honest, I just loved playing the game.

“Now, I’m much more interested in owning a team or running my business. Maybe if the right job had come up... who knows?"

Reflecting on the type of job he would take, Beckham revealed he was sounded out as a potential England manager in the past.

“I remember coming towards the end of it all and we had just been knocked out of a World Cup and someone from the FA told me to start doing my badges," Beckham explained.

“So I think some people within the FA saw me possibly as a future England manager, just because maybe I had had a successful career being England captain.”

But when asked if he ever held ambitions to become United manager, he replied: “No, not at all."

Instead, Beckham's ambitions could lie at St George's Park as a future England manager.

He continued: "If someone turned around to me and said, ‘If the England job came up, would you take it?’, I mean of course I would think about it, because I’m a passionate Englishman and I’m passionate about our national side, but would I be any good at it? Who knows?

“It’s a dream job, but Gareth is doing the most incredible job for us right now. He’s brought energy and excitement back into the game and the fans – myself included – are enjoying that.”
