David Attenborough calls on Glasgow COP26 to kickstart 'a wonderful recovery' from climate change

David Attenborough has called on the COP26 summit in Glasgow to kickstart "a wonderful recovery" from climate change.

The world's best known natural history broadcaster told an audience of world leaders at the SEC - including Joe Biden and Boris Johnson - it should be possible to work together to save the planet.

Attenborough, 95, was among the opening speakers at the international climate conference by the River Clyde.

He said: "The people living now, who are the generation to come, will look at this conference and consider one thing did that number stop rising and start to drop as a result of decisions made here?

"We have every reason to believe the answer can be yes. If working apart we are a force powerful enough to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it.

"In my lifetime I've witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could - and should - witness a wonderful recovery.

"That desperate hope is why the world is looking and why you are here."

Biden gave a standing ovation to Attenborough following his speech where the broadcaster called on world leaders to act to reduce the level of carbon in the atmosphere.

The veteran climate campaigner had also warned that humanity was “already in trouble” from climate change.

Attenborough charted carbon emissions throughout human history, which has peaked at 414 parts per million.

“Our burning of fossil fuels, our destruction of nature, our approach to industry, construction and learning, our releasing carbon into the atmosphere – we are already in trouble,” he said.

“The stability that we all depend on is breaking.

“This story is one of inequality as well as instability.

“Today those who have done the least to cause this problem are being the hardest hit – ultimately all of us will feel the impacts, some of which are now unavoidable.”
