Daughter of woman who died after being set alight by monster boyfriend calls for murder trial

A woman whose mother died two years after being set alight by her boyfriend says he should now face trial for her murder.

Ellen Marshall, 43, suffered burns over up to 90 per cent of the top half of her body from the horrific attack in April 2021.

The mum-of-four struggled to breathe independently and was given a 50 per cent chance of survival.

She bravely clung to life for almost two years until her death at Nottingham City Hospital on March 11.

The nightmare unravelled during a petty disagreement between Ms Marshall and her boyfriend Leigh Pateman.

Following the argument, Pateman, 43, poured petrol over Ms Marshall from a jerry can and used a lighter to ignite it.

He then fled on his bike and left Ms Marshall for dead after pouring two bowls of water over her at her flat in Skegness, Lincolnshire.

Police described the attack as "one of the worst cases of domestic violence" they had seen and are waiting for post mortem results to establish how she died.

Her daughter Paige Clarke, 25 is now calling for Pateman to be charged with murder if tests prove her mum died as a result of her burn injuries.

"I would have thought it was obvious that the monster who did this to my mum should now stand trial for murder and serve a life sentence," she said in an exclusive interview with MailOnline.

"We have to wait for the autopsy but this is what we would like to happen."

Pateman admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and was jailed for 17 years and ten months last March at Lincoln Crown Court.

He was handed an extended sentence meaning he will send an extra four years on licence after his release.

Paige, from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, remembered her mum as a "lovely woman" with "a big character".

In a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook, she wrote: "No more pain and suffering now mum. Sleep well and I will see you soon. I love you."

Paige told how she is still processing the thought of not having her mum around and is supporting her siblings in the family's loss.

"We knew it was going to shorten her life expectancy but we did not think it would be this quick," she said.

Ms Marshall was essentially in hospital ever since the attack, Paige explained.

But her passing came "out of the blue in some ways" because she would be severely unwell and then bounce back, Paige added.

She was able to talk but then became unresponsive during worse periods.

Paige added: "I am going to miss her. She was very outspoken and would light up a room when she walked in."

Ms Marshall's former partner and father of her children Alan Clark said the police are considering whether to bring a bigger charge.

He told how difficult it has been for the children with Ms Marshall in hospital for two years.

Ms Marshall was set alight at around 10.30pm as she sat in an armchair in her ground floor flat.

She was discovered by firefighters still conscious and managed to give her name but said her injuries were self inflicted.

The mum was rushed to Boston Pilgrim Hospital where she had an initial 12-hour surgery to her face, neck, abdomen, chest and limbs.

She also lost some of her fingers and had severe damage to her eyes.

Pateman was arrested at his mother’s house where he was found covered in soot, and needed treatment for burns to himself.

In a statement this week, Lincolnshire police said: "Ellen Marshall’s passing has been brought to our attention, which is a dreadful loss.

"The Coroner is currently in charge of the inquiry, and we are working together with both of them and the Crown Prosecution Service in order to carry out an autopsy."

An inquest into Ms Marshall's death has been opened by Paul Smith, the area coroner for Lincolnshire.

The cause of her death is yet to be determined.
