Dartmoor fire: large blaze that can be seen for miles lights up the night sky

A large fire has broken out on Dartmoor that can be seen from miles away.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service say the blaze is near Peter Tavy, a few miles north-east of Tavistock.

The Mirror Online reports that five pumps and other units have been dispatched to the incident.

However, as of 8.20pm, firefighters had not yet managed to access the fire due to the remoteness of the location.

A number of people have reported seeing flames in the area.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews are currently at Peter Tavy but we haven't actually accessed the fire yet. We have five pumps and various special appliances."

Images posted on social media by people nearby appear to show a large section of moorland on fire.

One witness has described the scene as 'Biblical'.

Matt Gilley told Plymouth Live: "I'm nearing Cadover now. I can't actually see the flames but the hills are like a silhouette from the smoke.

"It's Biblical."
