Darryl Valroy Young has triple murder case pushed back amid evidence delays

A man accused of shooting dead three members of a farming family in North Queensland has been remanded in custody until next year.

Darryl Valroy Young, 59, appeared via video link in Bowen Magistrates Court charged with the murders of Mervyn and Maree Schwarz, 71 and 59 respectively, and Mrs Schwarz's 35-year-old son, Grahame Tighe, near their Bogie property in August.

He is yet to enter a plea.

Mr Young was also charged with one count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting Mrs Schwarz's youngest son, 30-year-old Ross Tighe, who suffered critical injuries but was able to flee the scene and alert authorities.

Supporters of Mr Young attended the court hearing and sat rigidly as the police prosecutor asked Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan for an extension to deliver the brief of evidence, citing delays in forensic and ballistic evidence examinations.

Mr Young's barrister, Phil Rennick, appeared via phone and told the court he had only received a portion of the police evidence that morning.

Mr Rennick told the court he received an index to the brief, which detailed 46 witness statements and more than 70 exhibits.

The court heard Mr Young was charged with three additional offences, including possessing an unregistered Breda shotgun, possessing a replica weapon and possessing a Winchester rifle, which was suspected of being tainted property.

Magistrate Hartigan ordered the brief of evidence to be extended to February 4.

Mr Young, who appeared from the high-security Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, is expected in Bowen Magistrates Court on February 7.

Outside the court a woman claiming to be Mr Young's relative told the media the court process was a "fiasco".

The woman declined to comment further and she and another man drove away.
