Darren Smith joy at ending 'frustrating' Clyde spell for East Kilbride title dream

Darren Smith admits he was glad to bring his “frustrating” spell at Clyde to a close in favour of a title challenge with East Kilbride.

The 32-year-old striker made the switch to The Bully Wee last summer after a successful scoring spell at Stirling.

He earned fan favourite status after his wonder goal against Falkirk took three points back to Cumbernauld early in the campaign.

However, in League One he was mostly used sparingly by Danny Lennon or deployed as a winger.

Following his exit from Broadwood Stadium, Smith admits he was made to feel wanted by Kilby boss Stevie Aitken again.

He is now hoping to add his first league winners medal with the Lowland League title favourties.

“It just didn’t really pan out how I wanted it to,” said Smith.

“I wanted to play more and score more goals but it never really materialised. It just didn’t work at Clyde.

“I was grateful for the opportunity there, but I started looking for something else and then Stevie Aitken phoned me.

“We had chat and then I spoke to him a few times after that.

“I was excited by the prospect of that and the direction he had for the club.

“It was difficult last year because the season ended early, so you miss out on a lot of chances that way.

“It was really just a frustrating experience overall.

“I spoke with Clyde on the Tuesday and Stevie spoke to me.

“I spoke to a lot of other teams as well but Stevie made me feel really wanted; he wanted to sign me.

“I was just sold by everything. It looks like it’s going to be a successful season.”

He added: “I’ve never won anything apart from individual things.

“I’ve never won a league and this felt like a really good opportunity to be a part of something.”
