Darcey Bussell quit Strictly because she 'refused' what Shirley Ballas was 'very up for'

The Strictly Come Dancing judging line-up underwent a huge transformation this year when Dame Darcey Bussell was replaced by Motsi Mabuse.

Darcey, 50, had stunned fans back in April when she announced plans to quit back - but never revealed the real reason why.

After the first live show returned to air without Darcey last week, insiders have now claimed certain changes to the format inspired the former ballerina's decision to leave.

They told The Sun that a new team of executives want the judges to strut their stuff this year, but Darcey Darcey did not want to show off on the dancefloor and preferred to leave it to the celebs and professionals.

At the launch, viewers saw Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli and newcomer Motsi parade their best moves in an energetic group performance.

It came as a shock to fans who are more used to seeing the judges sat behind the desk.

But it seems as the series progresses, viewers will be seeing another side to the fab four - a move that led Darcey to opt out.

Her response to the switch-up is said to have come in stark contrast to head judge Shirley Ballas' reaction.

Shirley revealed: "I was all for it because I think, 'You're older but you're not dead and you can still do a bit.'

"You can't do what the pros do by any means, but you can get out there and show the public that you can still move your left foot and your left foot," she told the Sun.

Speaking about former co-star Darcey, Shirley added: "I don't know whether she was uncomfortable, or did she want to do it, or didn't she want to do it?"

Shirley , who joined Strictly two years ago, added: "Motsi, Craig and Bruno all love to dance. We get so excited. But I wish Darcey well and I'm sure she'll find her own thing. She's a national treasure."

Earlier this week Darcey snapped when asked to comment on Strictly during an interview with Good Morning Britain.

The former Strictly judge claimed she had been "too busy" to watch the 2019 series opener.

Darcey had an awkward exchange with Piers Morgan (ITV)

Host Piers then jokingly asked if she had noticed a Strictly ratings collapse without her, but Darcey came back with another bizarre response.

"I’m not here Piers to talk about Strictly I’m here to talk about national fitness day. And being active," said Darcey.

At the end of the chat, Piers said he was rallied to get fit, then cheekily added: "And don't mention Strictly. See you Darcey."
