Dara Calleary appointed Minister for Agriculture after Barry Cowen sacking

Dara Calleary has been promoted as the new Minister for Agriculture.

He replaces Barry Cowen who was sensationally sacked on Tuesday night.

Mr Calleary was overlooked for a senior Cabinet role two and a half weeks ago when he was instead handed the position of Chief Whip and made a Super Junior Minister.

There was surprise at the time as Mr Calleary is Fianna Fáil’s deputy leader and was leading the party’s government formation negotiations that delivered the new coalition.

The shake-up after Mr Cowen’s firing also sees Jack Chambers take up the role of Chief Whip and Seán Fleming getting a junior ministerial portfolio on insurance.

Ms McDonald was critical of the party and government reshuffle, saying after Mr Calleary’s promotion announcement: “same old Fianna Fáil.”
