Danny Jones's wife Georgia tearfully details health battle in TV return after Maura Higgins kiss scandal

Danny Jones’ wife Georgia Jones broke down in tears during an emotional interview on This Morning as she opened up about her struggle with postnatal depression.

The podcast star’s appearance on Monday’s installment of the ITV series marked her first television appearance since her husband was seen kissing Maura Higgins earlier this year.

Speaking to presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, the former Miss England spoke candidly about her mental health battle after the birth of her son, Cooper, who she shares with Danny.

According to the NHS, postnatal depression is a common condition that affects more than one in ten women after childbirth, and can impact both mothers and other parents during the early stages of parenthood.

The 38-year-old bravely shared: “The immense love I have for him now (Cooper) wasn't always there in the beginning.

“The hardest part for me, becoming a mum, was just that. Becoming a mum. It was the initial entrance of Cooper into the world and how I felt.”

Fighting back tears, Georgia recalled feeling disconnected and overwhelmed after giving birth in 2018.

She shared “It wasn't that instant gushy, ‘Oh my god I love my baby so much’ and I think because I didn't feel that, I felt so much pressure on myself.

“I wasn't the best person to be around. I was just low. I felt like I was failing, really failing at being a mum. I didn't want that. Nothing in me wanted to feel the way I was feeling.

She bravely continued: “You try and you try and each day you wake up and you think hopefully I'll feel better today, and you know, you don't. And then you're like ‘Why, what's wrong with me?’

“I had postnatal depression and despite trying to mask it, those closest to me knew I wasn't coping.”

What is postnatal depression (PND)?

Postnatal depression is a form of depression that can affect parents after the birth of a child.

It’s more common than many realise, impacting over one in ten women in the first year after giving birth — and it can also affect fathers and partners.

Getting support early is important, as the symptoms can last for months or worsen over time, affecting not just your wellbeing but also your baby and wider family.

Postnatal depression can start any time in the first year after giving birth.

Signs that you or someone you know might be depressed include:

  • a persistent feeling of sadness and low mood
  • lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the wider world
  • lack of energy and feeling tired all the time
  • trouble sleeping at night and feeling sleepy during the day
  • finding it difficult to look after yourself and your baby
  • withdrawing from contact with other people
  • problems concentrating and making decisions
  • frightening thoughts – for example, about hurting your baby

If you’re concerned for yourself or a loved one, speak to a GP, midwife or health visitor as soon as you can. They’ll help on getting the best support for the situation.

The most common treatments include talking therapies and, in some cases, antidepressants.

She shared that Danny had picked up on her struggles early on.

“Danny definitely noticed I wasn't myself,” she reflected. “What he found hard was that he couldn't fix it, he didn't know how to solve the problem.”

Georgia eventually sought professional help and began therapy — a decision she credits with changing her life. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done.”

During the segment, she also spoke with clinical psychologist Dr Caroline Boyd and other mothers who have experienced postnatal depression.

Reflecting on that period of her life, Georgia said: “I always say I felt like I lost my sparkle

“You know when you look back at photos from back then, I always look at myself and I think - this is going to make me upset - I think she wasn’t there.”

Her appearance comes just months after her husband Danny was pictured kissing Love Island star and former I’m A Celeb campmate Maura Higgins at a BRIT Awards afterparty in February — an incident he later blamed on drunken behaviour.

On Father’s Day, Georgia shared a photo of Danny on her Instagram Stories alongside one of her own father, writing: “For the Dads. Happy Father’s Day.”

The post marked the first time she had publicly acknowledged Danny, whom she married in 2014, on social media since the incident.
