Danny Ings has just made Liverpool millions after leaving Southampton

Liverpool are set to receive a financial boost as a result of Danny Ings' transfer from Southampton to Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old has joined Dean Smith's side for a reported £30million fee and has signed a three-year deal at Villa Park.

When Ings left Anfield in 2018 to join Southampton, initially on loan, Liverpool agreed a 20 per cent sell-on fee as part of the deal.

Initial reports suggested Jurgen Klopp's side could be set to earn a windfall in the region of £6million, due to yet another smart piece of business by sporting director Michael Edwards.

But it is likely to be an amount in the region of £2m, with the clause seemingly active for any fee above the £20m Ings was sold for by the Reds.

Should the £30m figure be accurate, then it would be 20% of the £10m difference - leading to a £2m payout.

Ings has proven to be a massive hit on the south coast and narrowly missed out on the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 22 goals during the 2019/20 season.

He turned down a new four-year contract with Southampton last month, which would have made him the most highest-earning player in the club’s history.

And he now joins Villa despite previous links with the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Villa boss Dean Smith said tonight: “Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played.

"He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team.

"I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great club."

Liverpool have several more sell-on clauses inserted in various deals that could be activated with potential transfers this summer.

Ings joins Villa after the recent additions of Leon Bailey, Emi Buendía and Ashley Young.

Jack Grealish looks set to leave the club in a £100m move to Manchester City - a deal the Reds and FSG will be keeping a close eye on.
