Danilho Doekhi and the key Rangers transfer trigger Steven Gerrard has a track record for pushing

The days of Rangers annual wholesale squad overhauls are seemingly long gone.

It wasn't so long ago the number of arrivals at Ibrox each summer exceeded double figures with regularity, such was the desperate need to find a winning formula.

The work of manager Steven Gerrard and sporting director Ross Wilson have, slowly but surely altered the landscape over the past few years.

Those early overhauls did extend into Gerrard's reign but with a Premiership title in the bag and a strong, settled squad, it's evolution not revolution on the cards now.

Vitesse Arnhem defender Danilho Doekhi could become part of this summer's fine-tuning, according to recent reports.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been linked with a switch to Ibrox and his current circumstances certainly align with other such examples Rangers have been keen to exploit.

Doekhi has just one-year left on his contract with the Eredivisie side and the chances of him signing an extension are diminishing with each passing day of the transfer window.

He's also spoken openly about interest in his services, suggesting he's decided his future lies elsewhere.

Vitesse technical director Johannes Spors, too, has admitted the player could be off this summer with the likes of Newcastle United also circling.

Doekhi has made 78 Eredivisie appearances for Vitesse and was a reliable presence for manager Thomas Letsch, who insists the towering stopper is capable of stepping up to a "big club".

Rangers have proven a dab hand in striking these deals; snapping up a young player at the end of his contract for no or minimal expenditure.

Scott Wright, Fashion Sakala, Jack Simpson and Nnamdi Ofoborh where Rangers have pulled the trigger in the past few months alone, all captured on pre-contract agreements with next to no fuss.

Doekhi is certainly in that bracket but perhaps less clear is where he would fit into Gerrard's squad as it is just now.

Rangers have no shortage of centre-backs and adding Doekhi would take their total to seven.

If the interest in the Dutchman proves concrete, then it feels likely at least one of those other six will move on this summer.

Connor Goldson is among Gerrard's most important players and he formed a water-tight partnership with Filip Helander for much of last season.

Leon Balogun extended his contract in April, Katic was a key man before his cruciate injury while Simpson is only just in the door.

Given he was shipped out on-loan last season, that would logically position George Edmundson bottom of the pecking order.

But it would be premature to declare his Rangers career over at this point, given he's been handed opportunities so far in pre-season and his acquisition in the first place will have come with a long-term plan.

Edmundson's Covid-19 protocol breach last season may have changed things but only time will tell.
