Daniel Finkelstein makes promise to Chelsea fans after being handed 'privilege' by Todd Boehly

Lifelong Chelsea fan and Conservative party peer Lord Daniel Finkelstein has sent a personal message to supporters after he was named on the club's board of directors by Todd Boehly.

Boehly was a leading figure in the consortium's winning bid, securing the purchase of the Blues from Roman Abramovich after a lengthy process that engulfed the second half of the season. On Wednesday morning he announced the figures that would make up the board of directors moving forward.

It is a move that will see some influential names depart including director of football Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck, with Boehly himself replacing the latter. Places on the board have predominantly been handed to those who invested in the consortium.

"As custodians of Chelsea FC, we now begin executing our long-term vision and plan for the Club, creating an outstanding experience for its passionate, loyal fans, and continuing to challenge for top honours in line with Chelsea FC’s decorated history," Boehly said in a statement on the club's official website. "Working together, side-by-side, we are firmly committed to winning, both on and off the pitch. For us, that effort has begun."

A journalist and politician, Finkelstein has regularly written for The Times, including a regular football column called The Fink Tank. He was also an advisor to former Prime Minister John Major and was made a life peer in August 2013, making him a Lord.

"I’m so proud to have been named a director of @chelseafc," the former journalist wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. "Serving on the Board of the club I have always loved is a privilege I take very seriously. I will read & reflect on fan messages, but it will often not be possible to indicate assent or dissent."
