Damning statistic highlights Arsenal's true defensive failings under Unai Emery this season

Conceding three goals in the first half of a game is never going to reflect positively on a team's defence , especially when the same team conceded three in their previous game.

Statistics are flying around social media showing the defensive problems that the Gunners are currently facing. As reported previously, the Gunners have made the most mistakes leading to goals in the league this season - 12.

One stat that is proving to be popular throughout football is the expected goals. According to the expected goals data, as reported by Orbinho on Twitter, the amount of goals that Arsenal  expected to concede is 47.3. Compared to the actual number of goals that they have conceded - 45 - the Gunners don't come out looking too bad.

However, comparing them to last season's statistics opens up a different debate. Have the defensive side of the team improved under new manager Unai Emery?

Last season's expected goals conceded comes in at 48.1, and the actual goals conceded was 51. With three games to go of the current season, the numbers may be at a similar level to last season come the end.

Arsenal finished the 2017/18 season, Arsene Wenger's final season in charge of the club, in fifth place, three points behind fourth. The final position meant that only Europa League football will be at the Emirates for the current season. Although Emery's men seem to be enjoying the competition. They face Valencia in the semi-final early next month.

It was hoped that Emery's arrival as manager would bring success to the club. While improvements have been made, statistics such as the expected goals show that further are still needed if the team aim to challenge in the upper echelons of the League, and retrieve their place in the Champions League in coming seasons.

Achieving Champions League football for the 2019/20 season is still however possible for the Gunners.  there is just one point separating them and fourth placed Chelsea. However, failing to achieve fourth place doesn't mean the end of the game, as winning the Europa League would also earn Arsenal a place in the elite competition.
