Dallas star Ken Kercheval who played JR rival Cliff Barnes dies aged 83

Dallas star Ken Kercheval, aka Cliff Barnes, has died at the age of 83.

The actor is believed to have passed away in his hometown of Clinton, Indiana.

Stephany Hurkos, who managed Kercheval, paid tribute on Instagram.

She wrote: “Ken was one of a kind – great actor, loved women, very particular about his clothes, always prepared, loved the stage as well as film and TV.”

Kercheval appeared in Dallas between 1978 and 1991.

As embittered lawyer Cliff, he constantly feuded with JR Ewing, played by the late Larry Hagman.

The pair were the only two cast members who were on Dallas through its entire original run, from pilot to finale. Kercheval appeared on 342 episodes before returning as Cliff for a 1996 telefilm and a US reboot seven years ago.

Speaking in 2012 about the role, he said: “JR was coming after my ass all the time, so I always had to defend myself.

“If I did something that wasn’t quite right, it’s because I had to.”
