Haridwar: As dak kanwars start arriving in Haridwar, local police have stopped heavy vehicles from entering the city. Besides, police have created several diversions to manage the yatra more efficiently. However, residents say that the diversions have increased their travel time. Notably, dak kanwars, who run with vessels of Ganga water for some distance and then relay it to the next person, usually come to Haridwar during the last phase of kanwar yatra.
According to the new traffic plan, buses coming from the Delhi route are now being stationed either at Rishikul or Kankhal ground. Further, vehicles coming from the Bijnor highway to Dehradun are being diverted to the Shyampur-Chila route.
Karan Singh Nagnyal, deputy inspector general of police, Garhwal, told TOI, “The number of devotees has increased in the district in the past few days as dak kanwars have started coming to Haridwar. Therefore, we have imposed a new traffic plan to manage the yatra. All heavy vehicles are being stopped outside the district borders. So far, 75 lakh kanwarias have come to Haridwar from different states to collect Gangajal from Har-ki-Pauri.”
