A dad has been locked out of his iPad for 48 years after his toddler typed in the wrong password repeatedly.

Evan Osnos, a journalist in the US, took to Twitter on Saturday to beg his followers to help him unlock his device, which said it would be disabled for another 25,536,442 minutes.

He said his three-year-old son had been trying and failing repeatedly to unlock the iPad.

Posting a picture of the bizarre iPad display, Mr Osnos wrote: “Uh, this looks fake but, alas, it’s our iPad today after 3-year-old tried (repeatedly) to unlock. Ideas?”

Scores of people responded to the picture, with one person asking whether the toddler got hold of the iPad “just as the 12,000,000 minutes from the previous lock expired?”

“I would just wait it out,” one wrote, while another said: “Next time just give the kid the passcode.”

One person who reached out to a friend who works for Apple said it is not good news for the iPad, writing: "Nothing they can do - they will never be able to use it again.

“They can try to hook it up to a computer with iTunes and put it in Device Firmware Update mode and wipe it but I doubt that would work.”
