D'Margio Wright-Phillips departs Man City on youth loan

Manchester City have allowed youngster D'Margio Wright-Phillips to depart on loan until the end of the season.

Winger Wright-Phillips, 18, has featured 14 times for City at U18 level this season, scoring four goals and registering two assists.

Son of City favourite Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandson of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, D'Margio has plenty of footballing pedigree. He has been at City for over five years and was part of the side who won the under-18 Premier League Cup last season.

Now, he joins Blackburn Rovers on a youth loan until the end of the season, and made his debut on Saturday against Manchester United in the under-18 Premier League.

Wright-Phillips started in the 1-0 home defeat until he was substituted after 66 minutes.

He joins first team left-back Angelino in departing on loan at the end of the January transfer window. Academy players Lukas Nmecha, Patrick Roberts and Matt Smith also departed on loan last month, with Ian Carlo Poveda joining Leeds on a permanent transfer.

Speaking earlier this season, Shaun Wright-Phillips said he was hopeful his son could make the grade at City, but suggested he needed to add a physical element to his game as he grows older - something the loan to Blackburn could provide.

"For me, I hope he does break through at City, but everybody knows it’s a tough challenge," he said during an ask me anything session on Reddit in October.

"But he’s at the right place to learn from great players and a great manager.

"He’s quick, he’s very skillful, and he’s got a very good cross. You can see he does get his goals as well."

"I think for me, now, he’s just got to mature, and I think he might need to be a bit physically stronger."
