D.C. United announce former Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich signing on two-year deal

D.C. United have announced the signing of former Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich as a 'designated player'.

The Polish international joined the MLS side on a two-year contract through 2024 with an extension clause for 2025, and is waiting to receive his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate which will officially make him a D.C United player.

The 32-year-old first arrived at Elland Road in 2017 and became a fan favourite player during his five years with the club. Throughout that time, he made 195 appearances in all competitions for the Whites and helped them to secure promotion back to the Premier League by winning the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

The central midfielder played his final match in front of his home fans during the 2-2 draw against West Ham earlier this month, with him being given an emotional goodbye as his teammates gave him a guard of honour while he left the pitch in tears.

It had long been rumoured that the MLS side were looking to acquire Klich's services but the move was officially announced by the club this afternoon.

In a statement released by the club, the D.C. United President of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper highlighted how important it was for their side to bring in someone of Klich's talent.

"This offseason was important for us to analyse our roster and see where we can make improvements after a disappointing 2022 season.

"Bringing in a top class designated player was atop our priority list and Mateusz has played at the highest levels for both club and country. He will add a ton of experience in the midfield and will be an impact player for us this season and beyond. We’re excited to welcome him to the Nation’s Capital."
