Cyclist seriously injured after being hit by car on major city road

A cyclist was left with serious injuries after a collision in the south of the city this afternoon.

Emergency services were sent to Allerton Road, at its junction with Penny Lane, shortly before 3pm today after reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a Seat Toledo car.

The cyclist, a man in his early 20s, was taken to the major trauma centre at Aintree hospital with serious leg injuries.

The collision led to all bus services in the area being subject to delays and diversions while emergency services dealt with the incident, on the road heading towards Liverpool city centre .

Emergency service vehicles could be seen in the middle of the road as they dealt with the injured cyclist.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said an ambulance and rapid response vehicle was sent to the scene of the collision.

Merseyside Police said the cyclist's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
