Cyclist pedalled down Gloucester Road with steak knife after being traumatised by hit and run

A Lockleaze cyclist pedalled down Gloucester Road with a steak knife in his pocket after being traumatised by a hit and run.

Keiron Spicer, of Blakeney Road, admitted yesterday (February 4) at Bristol Magistrates’ Court he had the serrated blade in his possession.

Police caught the 22-year-old just after 9pm on January 17, riding down the busy street in Horfield.

Prosecutor Cathy Thornton said a police officer received information on his radio that Spicer had been acting erratically and was in possession of a knife.

She added: “The officer attended and saw Mr Spicer on a pedal cycle. He approached and informed the defendant he believed he had a knife.

“The defendant volunteered he did have a knife and produced it from his pocket, not in a threatening way.”

Spicer was arrested and interviewed by police, telling them: “It’s for my own protection.

“It’s just self-defence. My intentions were not lethal.”

He told officers he had recently been victim to a hit and run, which was still “frustrating” him.

'A silly mistake'

Ms Thornton told the court: “He had two pedal cycles stolen from him recently and had been getting verbal upset from his mum about those incidents.

“He said he knew it was wrong to have a knife, and described it as a silly mistake.”

Katy Welch, mitigating, said Spicer has “struggled to cope” since the hit and run.

She asked that Spicer be allowed to speak to a probation officer before his sentencing.

Presiding Justice Ian Abrahams adjourned the case to March 3 at the same time, giving time for a probation officer to write a pre-sentence report.

Mr Abrahams told Spicer: “If you do not attend your next hearing—”

The defendant broke in: “I am liable to be rearrested.”

Smiling, Mr Abrahams said: “It’s clear you have been advised very well.”
