Cuphead devs announce two new games: a hand-animated successor, and an 8-bit throwback

Cuphead is back. Nearly four years after the hand-drawn platformer released it's final expansion, The Delicious Last Course, developer Studio MDHR is back for more. During Summer Game Fest 2026 MDHR announced not one but two new projects.

The first project is a true successor to the original Cuphead. It will be hand-animated and, "take Cuphead and friends on a fresh, exciting adventure." That's according to a puppet news anchor that stars in the trailer MDHR showed off at Summer Game Fest. The project is still in early stages, so we didn't get a look at any gameplay, but the puppet news anchor promises the team will reveal more when the time is right.

The second announcement is still Cuphead...with a twist. Mighty Cuphead Adventure comes from a small team within the studio and is billed as something completely different. It is, "a love letter to the era that brought us into world of video games." A brief trailer shows off an 8-bit platformer that, while staring familiar faces, has an an entirely new visual style compared to the hand-drawn aesthetic of Cuphead. The brief trailer makes it clear Studio MDHR's hallmark platforming gameplay will remain intact.

Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be available on modern platforms but for true retro fans Studio MDHR has something special planned. In a a blog post, MDHR reveals that a physical cartridge for the Sega Master System will also be available for purchase. In the words of Studio MDHR, "This is not just a retro-style game: it’s a game built from the ground up with all the unique limitations of a 1980s video game studio."

"Cuphead ships in Japan with amazing art from a Final Fantasy icon, and fans are losing it"
