Cubs' Yu Darvish plans to unleash full pitching arsenal in next start

CINCINNATI _ Yu Darvish took a somewhat unique approach Tuesday in preparation for his Saturday start against the Brewers.

Darvish, who threw only 59 of 102 pitches for strikes in his first start, devoted much of his bullpen workout to incorporating all his pitches and not just sharpening his fastball.

"I've got a lot of pitches, including my fastball," Darvish said. "So I'd like to include all those pitches and combine them all for my next outing."

Darvish said he used primarily his fastball and slider against the Marlins last Saturday, although he also possesses a cut fastball, curve and changeup.

He plans to use the resources provided by catching and strategy coach Mike Borzello and run prevention coordinator Tommy Hottovy as the season progresses.

"It's only the beginning of the season, so there haven't been that many outings I've pitched," Darvish said. "But I'm certain I can take advantage of that data."

Darvish is anxious to make amends for his last start, in which he allowed five runs on five hits while hitting two batters and walking two in only 41/3 innings. He is aware of the opportunity to make amends against the Cubs' National League rivals, just as he liked facing American League West rivals while pitching for the Rangers from 2012-17 and at the end of last season against National League West rivals with the Dodgers.

"There will be a lot of opportunities for me to face them," Darvish said. "I hope to put in a very nasty image as a pitcher to those teams."
