Cubs outlast Diamondbacks 6-5 in 15 innings

PHOENIX _ After losing a 3-0 lead with left-hander Jose Quintana on the mound, the Cubs eventually beat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in 15 innings Sunday.

Tied at 3 in the 15th, Ben Zobrist ripped a two-run double to right field, and Kris Bryant followed with a sacrifice fly. Arizona pushed two runs across in the bottom of the 15th before Nick Ahmed lined out to Zobrist in left field to end it.

The game lasted 5 hours, 36 minutes.

Quintana, staked to a 3-0 lead after 2 { innings, failed to pitch at least seven innings for the first time in four starts.

Eduardo Escobar hit a pair of home runs off Quintana, including a two-run, game-tying shot in the sixth.

After going six consecutive innings without putting a runner in scoring position, the Cubs stranded runners at third base in the 12th and 13th and nearly paid the price before Tyler Chatwood struck out John Ryan Murphy with two out and the bases loaded.

Chatwood bailed reliever Dillon Maples, who walked three batters after retiring the first two batters.

The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs and the heart of their order coming up in the 12th, but Anthony Rizzo struck out, Javier Baez popped to short, and David Bote grounded into a force play at second.

The Cubs' frustration became more acute in the 13th after Willson Contreras reached third with one out. But Albert Almora Jr. struck out to bring Zobrist to the plate.

Contreras tried to take matters into his own hands by breaking from third after catcher Carson Kelly threw a ball back to the mound, but Contreras was thrown out at home plate by 10 feet.

Pedro Strop, working his second inning, allowed a triple to Ketel Marte that went over the head of Almora in deep center with two out in the 10th. Escobar had a chance to win the game but flied to right.

The Cubs took a 3-0 lead on the strength of home runs by Kris Bryant in the third and Contreras in the fourth. But Escobar ripped a towering shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth.

Adam Jones led off the sixth with a deep drive to left that was caught by Kyle Schwarber. Marte followed with a hit over the head of Bote at third for a single, and Escobar followed with his two-run shot.

Quintana was pulled with two out, but reliever Brad Brach loaded the bases before striking out Carson Kelly on a 95 mph fastball for a called third strike.

Bryant smacked his second home run in three games, a two-run shot over the right field fence. Bryant has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games.

Contreras followed with a solo shot that cleared the left field wall in the fourth.

Rizzo legged out a double with two out in the fifth, prompting Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo to pull starter Luke Weaver. But the Cubs failed to put a runner in scoring position until the 12th.

The Cubs have a day off on Monday before opening a two-game series against the Mariners at Seattle.
