Cubs activate Montgomery and Fowler, demote Almora Jr.

MILWAUKEE _ The Cubs activated outfielder Dexter Fowler from the 15-day disabled list before Friday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fowler, who has been sidelined due to a hamstring strain, will bat leadoff and play center field.

To make room for Fowler, who hasn't played since June 18, the Cubs optioned Albert Almora Jr. to Triple-A Iowa. Manager Joe Maddon said he would keep a close watch on Fowler's hamstring.

Reliever Spencer Patton was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room for new left-hander Mike Montgomery, who will wear No. 38.

Outfielder Chris Coghlan, who is recovering from a right ribcage strain, will start a minor league rehab assignment Friday night for Double-A Tennessee. Outfielder Jorge Soler was en route to Tennessee to continue his rehab assignment Saturday night with the Smokies.

Reliever Joe Nathan will not join the team Friday, but a decision on his status is expected to be known no later than Saturday since Nathan's 30-day minor league rehab stint expires Friday night.
