CSAC: 13 fighters at UFC 241 broke rules on weight gain

Story updated at 2:04 p.m. ET to reflect correction on proposed CSAC rule allowing the cancelation of fights. The threshold is 15 percent, not 10 percent.

More than a dozen fighters at UFC 241 gained more than 10 percent of their body weight between Friday morning’s weigh-ins and Saturday’s fight day.

A chart containing official weigh-in figures and fight-day weights for the card was released today by the California State Athletic Commission, which regulated this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event at Honda Center in Anaheim.

Fighters booked in the bantamweight division had the most overages at four. The fighter with the largest weight gain in that division was Manny Bermudez, who gained 17.7 percent of his body weight in a negotiated catchweight fight of 140 pounds against Casey Kenney.

The commission can recommend moves up to a higher weight class when fighters miss the 10-percent cutoff. CSAC executive director Andy Foster told MMA Junkie on Monday that Bermudez must move up to featherweight for any future bouts in his state, while decisions on the remaining fighters will be determined soon.

Here is the full list of weigh-in and fight-day weights:

In 2017, the commission enacted a 10-point plan to curb excessive weight-cutting. Among the rules was a 10 percent cap on the weight a fighter is allowed to gain in the time between weigh-ins and an event. Those who come in over 10 percent can be be asked to move to a higher weight class.

Earlier this month, MMA Junkie reported the CSAC suspended the bantmaweight license of Aspen Ladd pending extensive medical documentation that she could compete safely in the division.

CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster is working on a rule that allows the commission to cancel fights when fighters gain more than 15 percent of their body weight between weigh-ins and fight day.
