Crystal Palace have offered £20m plus add-ons to sign Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion, bettering the £17m offer Stoke City submitted this week for the wantaway England Under-21 international. However West Brom are understood to have turned down both offers, with the chairman, Jeremy Peace, looking to hold out for an improved fee.

Stoke’s bid this week, confirmed by the Potters’ manager Mark Hughes, was understood to be £17m plus £3m in add-ons. Palace have offered a similar incentives on top of the £20m up front.

Despite entering the final year of his contract Peace’s baseline valuation of Berahino is £20m, but West Brom eager to secure a replacement before agreeing to sell and with more than one club definitely interested, appear willing to play hard ball in an attempt to receive a larger fee. West Ham’s Diafra Sakho has been targeted by the Black Country club but the Hammers also want to strengthen their attacking options before selling.

Berahino has one year remaining on his contract at The Hawthorns and last month turned down the offer of a new contract. He was close to joining Tottenham Hotspur 12 months ago but that move broke down following protracted negotiations between Peace and his Spurs counterpart Daniel Levy.

Palace, meanwhile, have sold Dwight Gayle to Newcastle and Emmanuel Adebayor has not been offered an extension to the short-term contract he was given midway through last season, leaving last season’s FA Cup finalists short of options in attack.
