Crystal Palace star Jeffrey Schlupp opens up on his 'freak injury' and provides update on return

Jeffrey Schlupp has spoken about his frustration after the lockdown pushed back his injury return for Crystal Palace.

The Ghanaian international has not played for Roy Hodgson's side since December, having been substituted at half time in the 0-0 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

Schlupp went off after picking up a hip injury, which turned out to be more serious than first thought, with the Palace man missing 14 matches since then.

He was closing in on a return from injury ahead of the suspension of Premier League football due to the coronavirus pandemic, and he has admitted that it has added to the frustration for him of being on the sidelines with what he has described as a "freak injury."

Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

“I reckon I got the injury ten minutes into the game [at Watford] and tried to ride it out until half time, but as soon as we went in, I was struggling to walk," he said, speaking as part of an Instagram Live on Crystal Palace's official account.

“It was really frustrating obviously, because I had started to go on a good run and the team was playing well.

“It was quite a freak injury really, and the physios hadn’t really seen it before. It was a hip tendon that I tore, it just split in the middle, and it was quite an awkward one.

“I have recovered now, but it is extra frustrating now with the lockdown, because I haven’t played since December.

“When you do get injuries, you get in contact with other people who have had the injury to find out how they recovered.

“But when you have got specialists telling you that they haven’t really seen the injury before, it is not something you can do.

“We worked really hard though, and spoke to some athletics physios, because it is an injury they see more in that sport, but it is all fixed now and I am good to go.”
