A crystal-enclosed statuette of Amida Nyorai will be shown to the public for the first time at Daigoji temple in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, from Monday through Dec. 10.
Ahead of the exhibition, the figurine -- possibly crafted by Kaikei, a Buddhist artisan from the Kamakura period (late 12th century to early 14th century), or his apprentice -- was shown to the press on Friday.
The wooden statuette, which measures about 5.5 centimeters tall, is coated with gold leaf and enclosed in a lotus bud-shaped crystal. It was discovered in a storage box at the temple in 2002.
