Crusaders threaten legal action over Irish Cup penalty shootout

Crusaders have threatened legal action following their Irish Cup penalty shootout defeat to Larne.

Crues goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey made three saves in the shootout but was penalised each time for stepping over his line before the ball was struck.

Tuffey was warned after saving from Andy Mitchell, and was then shown a yellow card when he denied Josh Robinson's first attempt.

The Crusaders keeper also saved Robinson's second spot-kick, but was again judged to have breached his goal line which resulted in a second booking and sending off.

Larne went on to win the shootout 6-5 and book their place in Friday's final where they will meet Linfield.

Crusaders manager Stephen Baxter said it was a "sad day for football" and said he was "embarrassed for the refereeing fraternity", while IFA Head of Referees Trevor Moutray has defended the application of the rules.

And in a statement issued hours after the game, Crusaders said they had appointed counsel to look into their grievance.

In a statement, the Shore Road club said: "Crusaders FC regret to announce that the club has tonight appointed counsel in relation to today’s penalty shoot out at Mourneview Park.

"The club will expedite any actions as quickly as possible to minimise any disruption to the Peaky Blinders Irish Cup Final, but it should be noted that Crusaders FC will take whatever action necessary to remedy the current situation.

"Our actions are in no way directed at our friends at Larne Football Club.

"We owe it to our players, manager and backroom staff, members and supporters to take this action."
