Crucial clue in hunt for heartless hit-and-run driver who left dad fighting for his life

Police have a vital clue in their hunt to identify a hit-and-run driver who left a dad fighting for his life. Cyclist Marian Carare, 48, was on his way to work at an Amazon warehouse when he was struck from behind by a white car.

The incident happened on Oldham Road in Rochdale in the early hours of Sunday (May 14). Marian spent several days in intensive care at North Manchester General Hospital but the father-of-two is now out of danger.

Now, Greater Manchester Police have established that the car which struck Marian was a white BMW 1 Series model. In a statement, the force said: "Parts that were at the scene that appear to be from the offending vehicle were recovered and on those items were part numbers, those have been checked and it appears to match a vehicle of that type."

The statement added: "Police are appealing for information after a vehicle failed to stop following a collision with a pedal cyclist. The incident occurred at approximately 2.30am on Sunday 14 May 2023 on the junction of Ashgrove on Oldham Road in Rochdale.

"Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or if anyone who has any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage to come forward. GMP can be contacted via 101 or information can be passed via the independent charity – Crimestoppers – on 0800 555 111."

Marian is now recovering at home in Oldham. His nephew, Ioan Florin Sarca, said today: "My uncle is better than he was. He is recovering from five broken ribs, a broken leg, two fractured discs in his spine, and a perforated lung.

"He has had a rock removed from his head. My father went asking at shops on Oldham Road for CCTV and we found one where Marian is riding by on his bike - but as yet no sign of the white car. My uncle will probably be off work for a couple of months."

He previously told the Manchester Evening News: "The impact of the collision launched him approximately 10-20 metres to the side, and the driver of the vehicle heartlessly drove away, leaving my uncle severely injured by the roadside.

"A compassionate neighbour from Oldham Road discovered my uncle and promptly called emergency services. Despite the efforts of the local authorities the person responsible for this horrific act remains at large.

"This was a cruel incident, and the family are appealing for any potential witnesses or information that may lead to the identification and apprehension of the person involved. We are seeking justice for Marian but also want to raise awareness of the safety of cyclists on our roads and the dire consequences of reckless driving."
